"Sounds of Grace" for brass quintet is based on the hymn "Amazing Grace", perhaps one of th emost recognized songs in the English-speaking world. IT has had a particular influence in folk music and has been recorded countless times. "Amazing Grace" is most closely associated with a particular strand of American life: Barack Obama, commemerated a Black tragedy before a Black congregation with this song steeped in two centuries of Black history. Forced labor hostages during the slavery period sang "Amazing Grace" on plantations, after abolition they sang it in churches, MLK Jr sang it on Civil Rights marches. The hymn promises redemption from sin and suffering and the possibility of spiritual progress.
"Sounds of Grace" is a beautiful, melodic version of a compilation of folk tunes. Written for 2 trumpets, horn, trombone and tuba or euphonium, it is a work that can be played by university groups and beyond. Premiered at the Mostly Modern Netherlands Festival in Mittelburg, the Netherlands in May, 2025
